GitHub is a hosting service for software development projects that use Git for version control.

GitHub is a social coding platform and a version control repository, that is a web-based hosting service providing Git revision control (versioning) for any type of project. GitHub has expanded versioning beyond IT and into the common path(s), so now we find city governments hosting datasets there, authors collaborating on documents, blog posts, novels, and even polls.

From this growth, GitHub has also begun offering more services, such as hosting a la GitHub pages, which in turn makes GitHub a content platform as well as a Git revision control system.
