It is an obvious phenomenon that the surface area each person takes up for living has been increasing over the past decades: our houses are getting bigger with our growing wealth.

I'm interested in the actual figures since the second World War. How large was an average house divided by the number of occupants in 1950, 1960, etcetera?

  • Data can either be the living/apartment area or the ground/surface area. For apartment buildings/flats the living area will be a multiple of the surface area.
  • I'm specifically not asking 'per household' because the average household size is decreasing. That would complicate the calculations.
  • I'm especially interested in Europe or my country, the Netherlands, but do not exclude other regions
  • Any data format is fine
