I wanted to access some publically available data which is available at mca.gov.in in India. I wanted to collect data for 100,000 companies, but this is behind captcha.

Although to my surprise there are many Indian directories (instafinancials, tofler, zaubacorp etc) who have been able to do the same somehow and make a repository as well (by bypassing the captcha, or so I assume). Also, some of these also have access to financial data of these companies which as far as I have been able to research is not freely available.

I also came across opencorporates, which has APIs, but has some but not all of these data points mentioned above. Fields such as charge details are available on other portals but not here.

Although there are sources like data.gov.in, but they neither provide the complete picture nor the most updated data(data last updated upto March 2015)

Also referring to good practices.

  • Format: any format (html, xml, csv, json)
  • Authority: any trusted authority.
  • Requirement: Financial Data for Private Unlisted Companies such as EBIDTA, Profit/Loss, Revenue, Financial Ratios (I can calculate these but I dont have access to underlying info) in addition to the above mentioned data points.

Could someone point me in the correct direction as to how I can find this data freely, or maybe if there is any other source I have not considered?

Thank you

  • @philshem Other portals like instafinancials, zaubacorp, and others are providing this information. Please check for yourself mca.gov.in/mcafoportal/viewIndexOfCharges.do and zaubacorp.com/company/ONE-97-COMMUNICATIONS-LIMITED/… and search for 'U72200DL2000PLC108985'. – Mayank Jan 5 '18 at 6:10
  • @philshem Have you any idea how they bypass the captcha on mca.gov.in/mcafoportal/viewCompanyMasterData.do Opencorporates mentions mca.gov.in as their source but I cant comprehend how they got past captcha, and what's stopping them from getting other data because it's all the same procedure, enter an identifier for a company and fill captcha. They should be able to do that as well. – Mayank Jan 5 '18 at 6:13
  • Googling "U74999WB2016PTC218283" (the CIN/FCRN/LLPIN/FLLPIN for one of the companies) shows other potential sources for the data (such as efirminfo.com/companylist), some of which may not be protected. I'm assuming India doesn't have the equivalent of a "Freedom of Information Act", requiring the government to provide this data in bulk? – Barry Carter Jan 9 '18 at 15:55
