On Stack Exchange, we believe the core moderators should come from the community, and be elected by the community itself through popular vote. We hold regular elections to determine who these community moderators will be.

Community moderators are accorded the highest level of privilege on our community, and should themselves be exemplars of positive behavior and leaders within the community.

Our general criteria for moderators is as follows:

  • patient and fair
  • leads by example
  • shows respect for their fellow community members in their actions and words
  • open to some light but firm moderation to keep the community on track and resolve (hopefully) uncommon disputes and exceptions

Full elections have three phases and an optional fourth phase (Primary):

  1. Question Collection
  2. Nomination
  3. Primary
  4. Election

Please participate in the moderator elections by voting, and perhaps even by nominating yourself to be a community moderator!

Hello ODSE,

I'm Albert, long time supporter/fan of this site.

I absolutely love the utility we provide for open data on the web, and how this community has evolved to the finely tuned answering machine we see today.

I'd like to be more involved behind the scenes, particularly in third party engagement, as well as cross domain pollination/partnering, which I'm assuming being a moderator opens the doors to.

Let me be the first to say that if you were building a case for why I should not be moderating, it would center around leading by example, patience and respect. That said, I think my historical timeline provides clear evidence of growth and change and speaks for itself.

I believe in openness (open data, open gov, open source and the open web, just to name a few), and would like to support our community reflecting that.

This election is over.
